ThermiVa is a non-surgical treatment that uses controlled radiofrequency (RF) heat to warm vulvar and vaginal tissue, with the goal of stimulating collagen and improving comfort and laxity — without surgery, anesthesia, or downtime. It is typically done as a short series of sessions.

How does ThermiVa work?

A smooth, handheld wand delivers gentle radiofrequency energy that heats the tissue to a controlled temperature. The warmth causes existing collagen to contract (a tightening effect) and stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin over the following weeks. Treatments are usually comfortable and require no numbing.

What the evidence — and the FDA — say

It’s important to have accurate expectations. ThermiVa’s device is FDA-cleared for general dermatologic and surgical use (creating heat in tissue), but it is not FDA-approved specifically for urinary incontinence, vaginal dryness, laxity, or sexual function. Published studies are small and largely report subjective improvement, and in 2018 the FDA cautioned the public about marketing claims for energy-based “vaginal rejuvenation” devices. Any potential benefits should be discussed candidly with a physician, and results vary from person to person.

Who might consider it?

Some women explore ThermiVa for a sense of external tightening or comfort, often after childbirth or with age-related changes. Because it is an elective, evolving treatment, a physician consultation is essential to review your goals, alternatives, and whether it is appropriate for you.

Sessions and downtime

A common protocol is about three sessions spaced roughly a month apart, with periodic maintenance. There is typically no downtime, and most people resume normal activities the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Is ThermiVa surgery?

No — it is a non-surgical, energy-based treatment performed in the office.

Is there downtime?

Generally none; normal activities can usually resume the same day.

Does it treat incontinence or dryness?

It is not FDA-approved for those uses; evidence is limited, so discuss realistic expectations with your physician.
