A Physician-Led Medical Spa in San Mateo, Reached From Palo Alto
Palo Alto has no shortage of places to get Botox or filler, and we won’t pretend otherwise. If proximity is your main criterion, you are well served close to home.
So here is the case for the drive, stated plainly: who treats you, and how long they have been doing it.
Why people travel to us from Palo Alto
Most of our patients come for one reason. Each procedure is done with Dr. Susan Lin, and this practice has been at the same San Mateo address for over 18 years rather than being a newly opened clinic.
That matters most with injectables, where results depend on judgment about dose, placement and your own anatomy, and where the best outcome is usually reached over several visits with the same person. Dr. Lin was board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, and has practised medicine since 1991. She performs every treatment personally.
For a busy professional, one unhurried trip to a physician you trust can be worth more than a closer appointment with whoever happens to be available.
The journey
It is 16.1 miles, about 24 minutes without traffic, northbound on US-101. At commute hours it will be longer, and that stretch of US-101 passes through the interchange where Caltrans is rebuilding the Highway 92 connection through summer 2028. Plan your appointment time accordingly — mid-morning or early afternoon is easier than either end of the working day. Interstate 280 is the alternative to US-101 if you prefer it.
By train, Palo Alto and California Avenue stations are both on Caltrain, with a ride of roughly 15 to 25 minutes to San Mateo depending on the service. San Mateo station is 0.80 miles, about a 15-minute walk from our door. Check the current timetable before you travel, as Caltrain service levels have been under review.
Parking at the practice is private, on-site and free.
Private, physician-led, and easy to reach from either highway
We are in central San Mateo, reachable from Interstate 280 or US-101, with private on-site parking at no cost. Many patients want a reputable, private practice rather than a large chain; at many chain clinics treatment is delivered by nurses, nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Here your consultation is with Dr. Susan Lin herself.
The same physician, for over 18 years
MD Laser and Cosmetics was founded in 2006 and has been at this San Mateo address for over 18 years. Your consultation is with Dr. Susan Lin herself, trained in obstetrics and gynecology and practising since 1991. She is fluent in Mandarin. She performs every treatment personally. Most patients come for Botox, Dysport and dermal fillers, with an emphasis on natural results. We are open Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 5:00, by appointment. The $150 new-patient consultation is applied toward same-day treatment, in person or by video.

Questions from Palo Alto patients
How long does it take to get to you?
About 24 minutes by car without traffic, 16.1 miles up US-101. Longer at commute times.
Is it really worth the drive when there are options in Palo Alto?
That is a fair question. Proximity is a real advantage, and if it matters most to you the local options are good ones. We offer something different: continuity — the same physician each visit, who knows what was done last time.
Can I come on the train?
Yes, from Palo Alto or California Avenue stations. It is roughly 15 to 25 minutes plus a 15-minute walk at the San Mateo end.
