How long does Botox last, and when should I start?

How long does Botox last and when should you start? A San Mateo physician explains timing, longevity, and how to make results last.

Botox and Dysport results, MD Laser & Cosmetics San Mateo (individual results vary)

Botox results typically last 3 to 4 months. You’ll usually see softening within 3–7 days, with full effect around two weeks. As the effect gradually wears off, muscle movement returns and you simply schedule your next treatment.

When to start is personal, but many patients begin in their late 20s to 30s as “preventative” treatment — softening lines caused by repeated expressions before they set in. Others start later to smooth existing lines. There’s no single right age; it depends on your skin, muscle activity, and goals.

To make results last:

  • Keep a consistent schedule rather than waiting until movement fully returns.
  • Follow after-care (stay upright, avoid rubbing the area for a few hours).
  • Protect your skin with sunscreen daily.

Because Dr. Lin personalizes dosing to your muscle strength and goals, your results tend to be more predictable visit to visit.
