Botox relaxes muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles (lines from movement), while dermal fillers add volume to smooth static wrinkles and restore fullness. They solve different problems and are often used together. Botox typically lasts 3–4 months; hyaluronic-acid fillers usually last 6–12 months.

How each one works

Botox (a botulinum toxin type A neuromodulator) temporarily blocks nerve signals to targeted muscles, softening lines caused by expression — frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. Dermal fillers are gel-like substances (most commonly hyaluronic acid, a sugar naturally found in skin) placed in or under the skin to restore volume, smooth folds, and contour features such as cheeks, lips, and the lower face.

When is each used?

  • Choose Botox for dynamic lines in the upper face — between the brows, forehead, and around the eyes.
  • Choose fillers for volume loss and static lines — cheeks, lips, nasolabial folds, and under-eye hollows.
  • Together: many patients combine both for balanced, natural rejuvenation.

Duration and results

Botox results appear within days and last about 3–4 months. Hyaluronic-acid filler results are visible almost immediately and typically last 6–12 months depending on the product and area. Both are FDA-approved and considered very safe when administered by qualified professionals.

Risks and candidacy

Both are minimally invasive with mostly temporary side effects (swelling, bruising, tenderness). Fillers carry rare vascular risks, which is why physician-level technique matters. A consultation and medical-history review determine which option — or combination — fits your goals.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get Botox and fillers at the same time?

Yes. They target different concerns and are frequently combined in one visit for comprehensive results.

Which lasts longer, Botox or fillers?

Fillers generally last longer (6–12 months) than Botox (3–4 months).

Are dermal fillers permanent?

Most modern hyaluronic-acid fillers are temporary and gradually absorbed; they can also be dissolved if needed.
