Which Dermal Filler Is Right for You? Juvéderm, Restylane, RHA & More

Most dermal fillers today are made of hyaluronic acid (HA) — a substance your body already produces — so the “best” filler is rarely about the brand name. It’s about which area you’re treating and your facial anatomy. At MD Laser & Cosmetics in San Mateo, Dr. Susan Lin, M.D. selects and places the filler that fits your goals. What these fillers have in common

Juvéderm, Restylane, Revanesse, and the RHA/Teoxane line are all HA gels that add volume and smooth lines. They differ mainly in thickness and firmness (how much they lift versus how softly they blend), and how long they tend to last — roughly 6 to 18 months depending on the product and area. A key safety advantage: HA fillers are reversible and can be dissolved with an enzyme if ever needed.

The better question: which area are you treating?

Here is how the choice usually breaks down by concern. These are general patterns, not rules — the right pick depends on your assessment.

  • Lips: softer, flexible gels that move naturally (for example, Juvéderm Ultra or Volbella, Restylane Kysse, or an RHA option).
  • Cheeks & midface: firmer, lifting fillers that restore structure (such as Juvéderm Voluma or Restylane Lyft).
  • Under-eyes / tear troughs: thin, low-swelling fillers placed with great care — a delicate, physician-level area.
  • Smile lines & nasolabial folds: balanced fillers that flex with expression (Juvéderm Vollure, Restylane Refyne/Defyne, or RHA).
  • Animated, expressive areas: resilient fillers (the RHA/Teoxane family) designed to stretch and recover with movement.
  • Versatile touch-ups: options like Revanesse can work across several areas.

Why a physician should choose and place your filler

Matching the product to the area is only half of it — placement matters just as much. Some regions (especially around the eyes and other vascular areas) carry more risk and demand a physician’s knowledge of anatomy, plus the ability to manage complications and reverse product if needed. That oversight is exactly what a walk-in setting can’t offer. Results and longevity vary by individual.
