Dermal fillers are injectable gels — most commonly hyaluronic acid, a sugar naturally found in skin — used to restore lost volume, smooth folds, and enhance features such as cheeks, lips, and the jawline. Results are visible almost immediately and typically last 6–12 months depending on the product and area.

How do dermal fillers work?

As we age, we lose collagen, fat, and hyaluronic acid, causing hollowing and static wrinkles (lines visible at rest). Fillers replace that lost volume: hyaluronic-acid (HA) gels attract and hold water, plumping the treated area and smoothing folds. Unlike Botox, which relaxes muscles to soften movement lines, fillers physically add volume where it has been lost.

Common types and uses

  • Hyaluronic-acid fillers (e.g., Juvederm, Restylane, Revanesse, Voluma) — lips, cheeks, nasolabial folds, under-eye hollows; reversible with an enzyme (hyaluronidase).
  • Other biostimulatory fillers can stimulate the body’s own collagen for gradual, longer-lasting volume.

What to expect

Treatment usually takes 15–45 minutes. Results appear right away and refine over 1–2 weeks as any swelling settles. Most people return to normal activities the same day.

Who is a good candidate?

Healthy adults seeking to restore volume or soften static lines. A consultation and facial assessment determine the right product, amount, and placement for natural results.

Risks and safety

HA fillers are FDA-approved and considered very safe with qualified injectors. Common temporary effects include swelling, bruising, and tenderness. Rare vascular complications make physician-level technique and anatomy knowledge important.

Frequently asked questions

How long do dermal fillers last?

Most HA fillers last 6–12 months; some biostimulatory options last longer.

Are fillers reversible?

Hyaluronic-acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed.

Do fillers look natural?

When conservatively dosed and well placed, fillers restore volume while keeping your natural look.
