An IPL (intense pulsed light) photofacial uses broad-spectrum light to reduce sun damage, brown spots, redness, and visible vessels, creating a clearer, more even skin tone. Unlike laser hair removal, an IPL photofacial targets pigment and redness in the skin rather than hair follicles, and usually takes a short series of sessions.

How does an IPL photofacial work?

IPL delivers a broad spectrum of light (multiple wavelengths) that is absorbed by pigment (melanin) in sun spots and by hemoglobin in tiny blood vessels. The absorbed light converts to heat, breaking up excess pigment and reducing redness, while the surrounding skin is preserved. Over the following days, darker spots often flake or fade, revealing brighter, more even-toned skin.

What can IPL treat?

  • Sun spots and age spots (hyperpigmentation)
  • Facial redness and flushing (including some rosacea-related redness)
  • Small, visible blood vessels and spider veins
  • Overall dullness and uneven tone

How many sessions and what to expect

A typical plan is about 3–5 sessions spaced a few weeks apart, with maintenance as needed. Treatment is quick with little to no downtime; mild redness or a warm sensation may follow, and pigmented spots may temporarily darken before flaking away. Sun protection before and after is important.

Who is a good candidate?

IPL is well suited to sun damage, redness, and uneven tone. Because IPL targets pigment, suitability depends on skin type — a consultation confirms whether IPL or an alternative is best and reduces the risk of pigment changes in richer skin tones.

Risks and safety

Performed by trained clinicians, IPL photofacials have a strong safety profile. Temporary redness, swelling, or darkening of spots can occur; strict sun protection lowers the risk of side effects.

Frequently asked questions

Is an IPL photofacial the same as laser?

No — IPL uses broad-spectrum light for skin tone and redness, while laser hair removal uses one focused wavelength to target hair follicles.

Is there downtime?

Usually minimal; you can typically return to normal activities the same day with sun protection.

How many treatments will I need?

Commonly 3–5 sessions for best results, then maintenance.
